The American newspaper The New York Times revealed in an extensive report that Egyptian-Turkish poet and dissident Abdulrahman Yusuf al-Qaradawi has been held in the United Arab Emirates for more than seven months, after being extradited by Lebanese authorities in January 2025, following videos he posted criticizing the negative role of some Arab states in Syria.

Amnesty International has urged the immediate release of Egyptian-Turkish poet Abdul Rahman Al-Qaradawi, who has been subjected to enforced disappearance since January 8, 2025, following his extradition from Lebanon to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Rights groups have described the case as a clear act of transnational repression.

Al-Qaradawi's extradition from Lebanon and imprisonment in the UAE is an alarming example of how Arab states collaborate to eliminate dissent beyond their borders.

His lawyer, Rodney Dixon, added: “Abdulrahman was taken from his family, forcibly transferred across borders, and thrown into solitary confinement in a country that is not his own, with no evidence he committed any crime… This is not an extradition — it is a kidnapping in plain sight.” Dixon is urging British police to open an investigation under the UK’s universal jurisdiction laws,
